De/Saturation Versus and Price Check
«: December 06, 2012, 08:02:32 PM»
Hi, posting as myself, I'd like to ask a question of what would herald better in this certain portrait: saturation or less saturation? We've been arguing over it for a while now, so I'd like a better opinion. p:

I personally like the less saturated one, but the argument has been going onnnn and onnnn about it. >: Do you prefer normally saturated pictures over low saturation pictures?

Now to price check. This was by me as well for her art. Because I'm interested in what you have to say about the prices that have been set.

Price check for ports/pixels:

Cartoon stuff like this (not yet priced/commissionable):

Realism (around 100euro+)

for the saturation problem you're having, i think it depends on what mood/environment you want to portray in your portrait. the saturated one is warmer whereas the desaturated is cooler. i think what's making it hard for you to choose is the lack of different values. it's easier to see in black and white. her eyes are way too black (or the rest of her is way too light), making it seem like the port is just eyes floating on white. the shapes are not well defined and it looks like everything is blending together:

in terms of pricing, i think for the cartoon stuff you might be able to start at $10 and adjust depending on difficulty of the char or the amount of the time you spend on each.

i don't agree with the 100euro+ pricing on the three pieces you've linked as examples though.
for this one http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/227/8/5/meet_daddy__by_trunchbull-d5b7xb3.png the texture on the reptile is super awesome and that in itself makes your work more valuable. however, it seems like the level of rendering and quality decreases as you go down the piece. is his tail attached to his leg? also, the way the woman is rendered and her anatomy (her legs, her right hand??) takes away completely from the awesome work of the reptile's face. the reptile has sharp, wonderful textures whereas the woman seems haphazardly done. if someone is paying 100+euro they are going to expect consistency and a certain level of anatomical understanding.

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/155/5/7/1_is_silver_the_other_gold_by_trunchbull-d528ag2.png is not worth 100+euro because of very basic anatomy issues again: both the silver and gold girl's legs and feet, the gold girl's hand. it looks like you spent a lot of time on their torsos and upper bodies and ignored the legs and feet.

http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/181/5/0/heaven_overrated_by_trunchbull-d55gm8t.jpg has beautiful textures again, but the girl's face looks flat (i think it's because it looks like her nose blends into the dark part of her face). studying planes of faces will help.

for everything else.. you're really good at drawing metallic/latexy things. i think the main things you need to work on are faces, general anatomy (legs, feet, and hand especially), and keeping the level of detail and rendering in a piece consistent and uniform. you may also want to explore drawing fur and male faces too.

Wait.

Are you posting with the PERMISSION of the artist?

I assumed you WERE Trunchbull up until your recent post.
I'm not entirely sure on how you're operating here with this, since its not YOUR art being critiqued.

Her english doesn't seem too bad to me, judging by her dA page.

Have Trunchbull HERSELF contact Zim via deviantArt to confirm that this is valid. We're only going off your word alone. we'd like to confirm it with her.
