We aren't artists....
«: January 16, 2008, 08:24:30 PM»
I figured this might go in the discussion board. Possibly... I dunno, this made me extremely upset, and perhaps others would like their opinion on what make ports and character drawings art and not just mindless doodles.

Art by definition is:
1.  Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.
2.
a. The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium.
b. The study of these activities.
c. The product of these activities; human works of beauty considered as a group.
3. High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.
4. A field or category of art, such as music, ballet, or literature.
5. A nonscientific branch of learning; one of the liberal arts.
6.
a. A system of principles and methods employed in the performance of a set of activities: the art of building.
b. A trade or craft that applies such a system of principles and methods: the art of the lexicographer.
7.
a. Skill that is attained by study, practice, or observation: the art of the baker; the blacksmith's art.
b. Skill arising from the exercise of intuitive faculties: "Self-criticism is an art not many are qualified to practice" Joyce Carol Oates.

So can someone explain to me why someone wouldn't think we are an art community?

Here is the whole thing. http://pinguinomalvagio.deviantart.com/journal/16434631/

As per your definition, everything a person puts their hands on to make look a way to them, is art.
These people are silly.
Some people think pornography isn't art though.
Art is in the eye of the artist.

There is no definite, permanent, and solid definition of art. That definition is what whoever created it sees art to be. It's just like trying to define the difference between pornography and tasteful nudity, everyone has their own opinions and not one person is absolutely right.

Art is creative expression.

The end.  :)

If your anti-social and you draw things, you are a artist. Or so says this joking around video or somthing i saw somewhere...
But im laughing at that journals contents in a pitiful way right now... "CURENCY WILL CORRUPT THE ART WORLD, OHMYGOSH,", did they stop to think that some of the best works of art are most probably commissions?

Art is whatever you want it to be. Everything is art.

Kosh - I dunno really, one of my other friends started talkin' to him about it, and he did the exact same thing to him, he's not an artist because.. Lemme see if I can put it all into words: We "furfags" are just doodlers, and he doesn't count doodles as art. Apparently doodles won't pass in the "real" art community. And we only draw for money, we don't draw because we enjoy it.

Many furc artists draw for the enjoyment. Just because you make money off of art does not mean you don't enjoy it. If you didn't enjoy it you wouldn't do it.

last time i checked da vinci and van gogh were commissioned a lot???

i don't see how this guy thinks money is corrupting the art world considering that people have been commissioned for art for an incredibly long time.

Actually, a lot of art in history has been commissioned, from royal portraits to even the Sistine Chapel.

Animators get paid too, and I know for a fact most only animate because they enjoy it. Does that make what they're doing any less artistic and valuable? I say no, especially because traditional animation is a tricky field, and takes a lot of skill and talent to be able to do what they do; I should know, I've tried.

Art for the sake of art really is great. Getting paid for doing something we love is even better. Honestly, I wouldn't lump someone like him in with real artists, since he's obviously giving definitions that put so many limitations on such a broad subject.

People like that guy make me have to use my angry face.

A piece of trash on the ground can become art with a simple photograph and a fancy title like "abstract". Society these days. Haha~

I agree. Who really cares what people think, as far as if your art is art or not? If you're making art, then you are doing it for yourself above everything. Whether you take a commission to be paid, or draw something you will never show anyone, you are making yourself a little happier one way or another - and if you can make others happy with it as well then thats awesome. In the end though, if you consider it to be art for yourself, then it is.

People are going to have differing opinions no matter what. Let them think what they want to; rallying a bunch of angry artists up against them isn't going to solve anything.

Quote from: David Cronenberg, Rocketboom, 07-19-06
Art forms of the past were really considered elitist. Bach did not compose for the masses, neither did Beethoven. It was always for patrons, aristocrats, and royalty. Now we have a sort of democratic version of that, which is to say that the audience is so splintered in its interests.

Quote from: Edith Wharton (1862 - 1937)
Art is on the side of the oppressed. Think before you shudder at the simplistic dictum and its heretical definition of the freedom of art. For if art is freedom of the spirit, how can it exist within the oppressors?

I Hereby agree with these quotes.  :-*

If you can create things/unique then you're pretty much an artist. Actually...anyone who can do something expressively and creatively is considered an artist or artistic.
