Re-evaluations Requested
«: February 19, 2008, 11:55:56 PM»
As per the recent trend of this board! ...
I'm getting closer to veteran status here on Furcadia and I've done over 100 portraits in my days. I'd like to get a re-evaluation of my creations for the community, from the community, in regard to standards, quality and prices. Constructive critique is welcome.

Here are some examples of my most recent portraits in singles:
And an archive of the most recent year:
Previous years are posted in the archives section of my gallery here in case you're interested.

I'd like to know what you think of them, and how/what you think I should price.
Noteably, I spend most of my time in feral dreams... so most of the commissions I get are of feral (usually canine) characters. But I love doing anthros, and I'd love to explore different species. I'm very flexible in this way, and I've been told I have a nack for getting characters quite exact.

Presently, portraits I do take 1-3 hours on the sketch, 30 minutes to 1 hour on the outline, and 5-10 hours on the coloring/background; totalling an approximate range of 6-14 hours per portrait. Give or take.
I won't mention what the prices are currently for several reasons, a couple being that they are being contested in my mind right now (part of the point for this post), and they could affect some people's suggestions. Y'never know.

I've also picked up the idea of doing reference sheets, and I'd like an evaluation on those too. Some examples:

http://lastofautumn.deviantart.com/art/Nokial-quot-Fursona-quot-Reference-43029343 (2005)
http://lastofautumn.deviantart.com/art/Vigen-Reference-Sheet-43026588 (2005)
To show that it's the same general idea with improvements, there's some from previous years.

I've done patches and avatars, but I don't feel I have enough examples to receive a good evaluation.

Alright, well. From here, the floor is yours. :}

7-14? Hmm. That's alright I suppose. Except it'd be a dollar per hour of work...

i'd pay 7-10
the anatomy and backgrounds are nice, but the shading on the wolves is really rough.

15+ gd would be reasonable for ports.
honestly, i wouldn't charge money per hour. any artist can sit there for three hours and claim to be working. i, as a customer, would prefer a stone-set price. but that is only my opinion.

10-15 gd for ref. sheets.

Thank you both for the input.

Sesruc, I'd personally slap the artist who charges by the hour. It just feels a little better to know you're getting something acceptable for valuable time.

I have a friend IRL who charges per hour. He's got an art degree and is an amazingly fantastic artist of the calibur that dwarfs everyone here.

I'd gladly commission him at his rates if he had the time to take my commission. He's a busy boy.

I have another friend IRL who charges 800 dollars for a 12 3/4" x 16 1/2" acryllic painted piece and 120 dollars for a quarter page sketch.

They're both professionals in their fields and disserve honest pay for honest work. I don't think that's worth a slap.

Point proven. It's certainly not common, though.

so i can have one.

but speaking truthfully here, I think you could go
from the 7-15. If you want to attract alot of attention.
Anything past 15 gds is a total no-go for me.
im cheap.
I don't buy any port more than a space.
But if you can get more money than that,
all power to ya.

For that anthroish port (http://www.furcartzone.com/gallery/2/501_14_02_08_10_42_59.jpg) you can get at LEAST 15 bucks, if not 20 or higher. It's as good or even better than some of the artists who charge 25+ (depending on a person's taste, of course). I'm just not a big fan of feral artwork for my own reasons, but 10-15 sounds reasonable for the detailed work.

Charging by the hour for professionals is a very different thing than charging by the hour in a game like this... I'd like to hope nobody here has to actually live off the money gained by doing 95x95 pixel ports. It's supposed to be an extra to afford digos or that extra paint set you want, or a watch, or a new cage for your bunny... Not to pay your monthly bills with like the pro's do. ;)
