Possible Thief
«: February 29, 2008, 08:28:18 PM»
I'm not flaming nor am I looking to accuse. Just asking for the opinions of the others artists here on this site. I've recently looked another port artist's gallery on dA and I've noticed something disturbing. The artist's style is not consistent and I'm wondering if some of these are stolen. Has anyone seen some of these ports or have any opinions on the matter?

There are more ports in the gallery. I just posted those because it shows a lot of variance.

She's already been discussed as tracing and potentially selling balto ports.

I've also seen that tiger port elsewhere, and have been trying to remember where, ever since I saw it in her gallery.

yes. what tachs said.

Yeah, she traces... often. She also claimed ripped sprites as her own work, and attempted to sell them.

Eeeesshh. I hate it when tracing and referencing are lumped together. Real referencing is just looking at a photo or possibly even in the mirror to see what an arm looks like bent at a certain angle and from behind, or whatever, and it just good research. I pose in the mirror to make sure I've got anatomy correct all the time. Breaks my heart to see people think of tracing as the same thing. :'(  :'(

Yes but recently I've seen a lot of 'references' that are the same exact picture drawn without the direct use of tracing. You're still taking the other person's lines, just with your judgment instead of your eyes.

Referencing should only be used for practice or parts of pictures/poses and every time you reference, you should always get the consent of the person whose art you are refrencing.

Google photographs if you can't figure out how something should look. Like a 'thumbs up' for instance. Rather than taking part of someone's portrait or copying a Disney picture, google a picture of someone giving a thumb's up and try to draw from that. Nature won't sue you for drawing in her likeness.

YEah, that's basically what I just said.

yeah i personally think referencing from someone's art is basically cramping their style lol.

but i agree about the photographs. I was accused of tracing a portrait because I used several photograph REFERENCES to get my anatomy right for that specific portrait. I study photographs of animals all the time to get their anatomy right, as every professional and amature alike are trained to do. That's the way you learn, by what you see.

I think people are getting insanely uptight about even giving credit for images you googled for anatomy references.

through these eyes i've looked the devil  in the face, and i've seen god's holy grace.

Nobody actually showed her the thread so she could even explain herself? O_o

urg, no i haven't. I wish people would stop saying stuff like that. x.x I've gotten to the point of ignoreing people. I USED to trace, but I don't anymore. If you have an account there please tell them that if they have a problem to take it up with me on here in NOTES. *grumbles* Sick and tired of dealing with this stuff. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Tell them that the Tiger Port is not someone else's. x.x I refed it from an actual pic. As did all the others up there except for the last three. Those are old, and ones I did a long time ago.

Like I said before, if they have a problem, have them bring it up with me. Not to go sneaking around behind my back or just slapping it onto my DevArt where I'll just report them for spam and block the comment.

I showed her the thread, and that's what she sent back, as for a comment on all of this, Skill said it better than I could. ^^

The person was just curious who posted this like..2 months ago? And then the people here were talking about tracing/referencing. And the fact is, is that because of the fact she traced before, you never know really. Some people quit tracing, some people dont.

And she did explain herself in the altmarket forums.

*huffs* I don't really remember if I was trying to sell the Disney ports or not. But if this creating a problem I can take them down. I've nearly forgotten about these ports as well. The disney-style ones that I have given out I do not think I sold. And if I did I might be able to refund those who I sold them too. One reason why I changed my style is because I realized that people might not be too appreciative of the ports looking so close to those.

I really haven't ment to cause any problems. *sheephish grin* Since I don't feel like registering on the Alt Market to post I would appreciate it if you'd tell everyone there that has posted that I didn't mean to cause an uprising or anything. Yes, I will admit that I have traced a couple of those ports, but those were ones that I wasn't planning on selling. I don't really have an excuse, and one would probably just make things worse.

I would have appreciated it if you had notified me before posting there. It kinda irks me, but I can understand why you did.

So this has already been discussed. And the new ones people are just wondering about because we've seen things similiar to them before. She has no need to snap.

As should any artist know, anything they did in the past can and will come back to haunt them, at any time, at any place. So she'd better get used to it--No matter how many times she explains it, or apologizes, or anything else, it will always come back from other people who heard about it, but don't know the resolution. It's a fact of life.

Either way, the topic should have been more or less over when I posted that it'd already been discussed. I'd suggest locking the thread and just leaving this up for reference.

Any more discussion on ethics and other such things should be taken to in depth talk, as I've seen stated in many other topics by mods.

If it’s already been discussed on FAM, then it  shouldn’t need to be posted on here, if they felt the urge to post it, it would have been better if they showed the person in question the thread.
